Cross-sectional model of teeth with periodontitis for patient education.

The facial side of the model shows the teeth as the patient would see them in their mouth, and the lingual side of the model shows a cross-section that clarifies what happens around the teeth under the gingiva as periodontitis progresses.

From a healthy tooth on the far left, gingivitis is shown to the right, followed by progressive periodontitis with extensive bone loss. To the far right is a loose molar due to traumatic occlusion.
The teeth in periodontitis stages III and IV are mobile corresponding to the bone loss.

The model can be used in conjunction with the patient's radiographs and intraoral photographs to provide thorough information about the situation and treatment options.
