About the Course

Hands-on course. The course aims to train dental assistants and dental hygienists to competently and safely perform delegated tasks involving local anaesthesia, should their supervising dentist wish to assign them this responsibility. However, the course is equally relevant for dental assistants/dental hygienists who are not delegated the task, but would like to have an increased understanding of local anaesthesia so that they can instruct patients and have the correct preparations ready when assisting the dentist.

Course Content

The entire group of dental assistants and dental hygienists begins the day together with joint theory sessions and hands-on training in local infiltration anaesthesia.
Teacher and Specialist dentist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Jan Tagesen, will cover communication with patients, medical history and pharmacology, guidelines on patient eligibility, anaesthetic agents and maximum dosages, anatomy and neurophysiology, injection techniques and equipment, potential complications, and basic life-saving first aid.
Between theoretical sessions, participants will have the opportunity to practise infiltration anaesthesia using phantom heads.

The final hours of the course day are dedicated to nerve block anaesthesia, including practical exercises on more advanced phantom heads that provide audio feedback when the anaesthetic is administered anatomically correctly. The training is conducted in smaller groups, as the Dental Institute has a total of four phantom heads available for nerve block anaesthesia.
