Emergencies and first aid in dental practices

Call to order

Course description

Emergency situations in dental practice are fortunately relatively rare. Especially compared to the large number of patients treated daily in a regular Danish dental practice. However, every dentist and dental hygienist will at one point or another encounter a patient becoming unwell, either in connection withor independent of the treatment provided.

The likelihood of facing a poorly patient, and a potentially life-threatening condition, will further increase as the proportion of elderly patients in practice with chronic diseases, among others, will increase as life expectancy increases. In some of these cases, proper diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment can be crucial to the patient's survival.

Dentists and dental hygienists are not trained in the diagnosis and treatment of acute situations, but with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, we have a good basis for providing adequate and possibly life-saving first aid. However, in order to make a likely diagnosis and initiate treatment, some theoretical knowledge about emergencies and their onset will be needed, as well as learning a few practical procedures, especially including CPR and artificial respiration.

In some of these cases, correct diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment can be crucial to the patient's survival. The course will be based on various emergency situations in dental practice, including pathophysiology with emphasis on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Basic resuscitation procedures will be reviewed, emergency tracheotomythe use of defibrillators, and the use of relevant first aid equipment including EpiPen.
