In this innovative and paradigm-shattering book, the author claims that almost all bad bites have their origin in a small lower jaw - what he calls anterior mandibular hypoplasia, or AMHypo. Paul Coceancig further claims that surgical treatment is the only means to correct it. AMHypo occurs due to a small anterior tongue and it leads to dewlap (poor chin-neck contour), dental crowding, retained third molars, a variety of dental malocclusions and retroglossal tongue displacement in the upper airway. In this book, the author outlines the anthropological basis of the small jaw and then outlines his six surgical methods for designing the face to optimize bite, airway and facial balance: IMDO, GenioPaully, custom BIMAX, SuperBIMAX, custom PEEK implants and SARME. IMDO - or intermolar mandibular distraction osteogenesis - is a less invasive surgery than third molar surgery, but can widen the lower jaw by as much as 16.5 mm and effectively bring the tongue forward. This eliminates the risk of later airway problems - not to mention dramatically improving the patient's profile. The surgeries and protocols in this book will make you rethink your approach to patient care and ask yourself how you can better care for your patient now AND in the future. The author sees no reason why we shouldn't expect to wear all 32 of our teeth in our adult lifetime in a Class I occlusion - and be free from dental crowding, retained teeth or airway collapse.
